Who We Are:
The Latino Student Union (LSU) at BCTC is dedicated to creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all Latino students. Our mission is to build a strong, vibrant community within the college, offering resources that support academic success and keep students on track to reach their educational goals—whether that means earning a degree, transferring, or pursuing further studies. We assist students in finding scholarships, and provide opportunities for volunteer work, professional skill development, and career planning.
As a student-led organization, LSU thrives on the ideas and events brought forth by our members, ensuring that every initiative reflects the needs and interests of our community. Above all, LSU provides a space where students can celebrate their heritage, share their cultural experiences, and find a sense of belonging and “home” within the college.
The Origins of LSU
The idea for the LSU came from a simple yet profound need: to create a space where Latino students at BCTC can find support, share experiences, build connections, and access advice that can help them shape their professional journeys. LSU was established by students, for students with the goal of ensuring that everyone has the support they need to navigate their college years at BCTC successfully. We are committed to making sure that all members have access to every possible resource, regardless of whether they are first-generation students, their immigration status, or any other challenges that may affect their college experience.
Our Core Objectives
The mission of the Latino Student Union is straightforward: to foster a welcoming and supportive environment for all Latino students at BCTC. Here is a breakdown of our primary objectives:
- Academic Support: We aim to ensure that all Latino students have access to academic resources such as tutoring, advising, and workshops to help them stay on track toward success. Whether you’re seeking to complete a degree, transfer to another institution, or explore new areas of study, LSU is here to help you achieve your goals.
- Connection to Resources and Opportunities: We understand that finding scholarships and professional development opportunities can be a challenge. That’s why one of our main goals is to provide information and support for finding scholarships, internships, volunteer opportunities, and other resources that will help you grow both inside and outside the classroom.
- Celebration of Our Culture and Heritage: LSU is a space to celebrate our traditions and share our stories. Through cultural events, social gatherings, and community activities, we want every Latino student to feel proud of their roots and find a place to call “home.”
- A Voice for Students: As a student-driven organization, LSU thrives on the ideas and suggestions of its members. We strive to ensure that each initiative and event reflects the needs and interests of our community.
Why Is a Latino Student Union Important?
For Latino students, it is vital to have a space that provides a sense of belonging and support. LSU exists to offer that support—through academic guidance, professional development workshops, and events where you can connect with others and have a good time.
All of this plays an important role in supporting a community where almost 50% of Latino students who start college do not finish. Over the past decade, the Latinx high school dropout rate has fallen, and college enrollment has risen, but Latinx students still lag behind other groups in earning a degree (Krogstad, 2016; National Center for Education Statistics [NCES], 2019). LSU aims to help change that narrative by creating an environment where Latino students can thrive, stay motivated, and find the resources they need to succeed.
